Dementia Nursing

WHat do we mean by dementia nursing?

Dementia nursing is a specialised type of care designed to provide support and assistance to individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia. Dementia is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour, and can have a significant impact on an individual’s ability to perform daily activities. The care we provide is tailored to the individual’s specific type and stage of dementia and may include a range of services, such as:

Personal care: Helps with personal care activities, such as bathing, dressing, and toileting. Qualified staff work closely with the individual to provide personalised care that respects their dignity and privacy.

Behavioural support: Dementia can lead to changes in behaviour, such as agitation, aggression, and increased mobility. Dementia care includes strategies for supporting residents with these behaviours safely and compassionately, such as redirecting the individual’s attention, providing sensory stimulation, or using calming techniques.

Nutrition and meal services: Provides meals and snacks to individuals, taking into consideration any dietary restrictions or preferences. Qualified staff may also aid with eating if needed.

Medication management: Includes medication management services to ensure that the individual is taking their medications as prescribed and to manage any side effects or interactions.

Social and recreational activities: Providing opportunities for socialisation and engagement in recreational activities, such as games, music, and art therapy. These activities are designed to promote social connections and mental stimulation.

Specialised staff training: Those who work in our dementia units receive specialised training in dementia care. This includes training on how to support the residents with challenging behaviours, communicate effectively with individuals with dementia, and create a safe and stimulating environment.

Safe and secure environment: Individuals with dementia are at risk of becoming disorientated so our units are designed to provide a safe and secure environment that provides freedom to mobilise, and reduces the risk of falls and injuries.
